OSINT by Industry

OSINT by industry: the same discipline of lawful collection, verification and source-referenced reporting answers very different questions in a security operations center, a litigation team, a claims unit or a newsroom. Each page below explains the questions a sector asks, the services that fit and the rules that apply.

  • 10 sectors
  • Sector-specific legal limits
  • Evidence documented for review
  • Confidential, NDA on request
Short answer

Open-source intelligence is used by corporate security teams to see threats early, by law firms to trace assets and preserve evidence, by banks and investors for due diligence and KYC, by insurers to test claims, and by public bodies, newsrooms and NGOs to verify facts. The method is the same; the questions, standards and legal limits differ by sector.

What OSINT Work Has in Common Across Industries

A defined question, a lawful purpose, independent verification and a report that separates facts from assessments.

  • The question comes first. A claims handler, a general counsel and a security lead need different answers from the same records.
  • Lawful and proportionate. Public information is still personal data in many jurisdictions, so each request is checked for purpose before work starts.
  • Verified before it is reported. Material findings are tested against independent sources and reviewed by a senior analyst.
  • Documented for scrutiny. Captures, dates and sources let a regulator, a court or an editor follow the work.

Tell Us About Your Sector and Your Question

We reply with a scope that reflects the rules and evidence standards of your industry.

Industry FAQ

Our sector is heavily regulated and our lawyers worry about privacy rules, so how do you make sure OSINT by industry stays within the law for a bank, an insurer or a public body like ours?

We scope every request against the purpose and the rules that apply to your sector before collecting anything. Under the GDPR and UK GDPR that means a legitimate interest that passes a balancing test; in the US it can mean the FCRA for employment decisions or insurance-specific fairness rules. We collect only what the question needs, document how it was found, and flag at scoping anything your lawyers should confirm.

We are not on your list of industries — we run a mid-size manufacturing company with suppliers in several countries — can you still help us, or do you only work with the sectors shown here?

We can help. The industry pages cover the sectors that ask us most often, but the services work for any organization. Manufacturers typically use supplier due diligence, company investigations, brand protection against counterfeit sellers and supply-chain risk intelligence. Email the question and the countries involved, and we will scope it like any other request.

Do you have people who understand how evidence has to be handled in our field, for example chain of custody for litigation or editorial verification standards for a newsroom?

Yes. Collection and documentation are planned around how the findings will be used. For litigation we capture pages with dates and hashes so authenticity can be shown; for newsrooms we separate what is verified from what is attributed; for compliance files we record sources so an auditor can follow the work. Tell us at the brief how the report will be used.

If we are a public body or a law enforcement agency, can you work under our own legal authorities and procurement rules, or do you only take private clients?

We work with public bodies as well as companies, within lawful open sources. Agencies keep their own legal authorities, and anything that needs warrants, production orders or covert powers stays with them. We can provide research capacity, training and documented findings that fit your procedures, and we follow your procurement and security requirements where they apply.

Our team does some OSINT in house already — does it make sense to bring in an outside service for our industry, or should we just buy better tools and train our people?

Often both. Tools and training suit steady, routine volume; an outside team suits high-stakes, cross-border or occasional questions, and surges your team cannot absorb. Many clients use us for the cases that matter most and for training their own staff, so the in-house team handles the routine checks with the same method.

How do we brief you if our request is sensitive for our organization, for example an internal fraud suspicion or a threat against a senior executive?

Send a short email to info@osint-s.com without sensitive details first, saying what kind of matter it is. We can sign your NDA before you share specifics and agree a secure way to exchange documents. The brief is read by an analyst, used only to scope the request and never disclosed without your written consent.
